Actually there are good reasons to use a scale that people “understand” whether it is looking at test scores from their kid’s school work or other rating systems.
SSI was not exclusively the product of engineers - there were working cinematographers involved too…
The technical papers describe how the curve-fit is analyzed mathematically so as to take into account both overall fit and individual spikes - this was worked several ways.
I’ve forgotten most of the higher level math and physics that were part of my college education so I am left with qualitative understanding of mathematical processes rather than being able to
do the math myself.
